Children's Clinic

Child Model

Is my child at risk?

Children should have their first eye exam at 6 months old.

We are often asked, how to we do this?  By the use of toys and games, we check for eye alignment, equal vision in each eye, or for a white pupil, which can be a sign of a serious condition.

For preschoolers who are not familiar with letters, we use pictures and pointing to identify the level they can see at.

Since children often think what they see is normal, so they unaware they are not seeing adequately.  Often school performance is reduced before it is realized their vision is suboptimal.  Children should have their eyes examined once per year.

Children's eyes are still growing.  Research shows that prolonged close work and inadequate outdoor light exposure can cause elongation of the eye, leading to nearsightedness (myopia).  Our clinic specializes in treating this condition.

Myopia control options include:

Atropine eye drops

Miyosmart spectacle lenses

Misight daily disposable contact lenses

Ortho Keratology, overnight contact lenses used while sleeping

Myopia Information

Myopia Daily Disposable Contact Lenses

These are specialty lenses to be used every day to prevent the progressionl of myopia.  The centre of the lens and the outside have different powers to reduce elongation of the eye.  The lenses are worn every day for a full day.

Do you want even more information on myopia?

Atropine Eye Drops

These are prescription eye drops to be obtained at a compounding pharmacy.  Atropine has been around for many years, but now it has been discovered at diluted strengths, it can slow elongation of the eye.

One drop is inserted at night each eye.

Specialty Spectacle Lenses

These eyeglasses lenses are worn as regular glasses.  The outside of the lens has a different power than the centre to slow myopia progression.  The eyeglasses are worn every day, for a full day.

Ortho Keratology

These contact lenses are worn at night to gently shape the front of the eye.  The desired shape corrects your child's vision so that no correction is required during the day.  No contact lenses or eyeglasses.  The cornea has a design such that the peripheral cornea focuses different from the centre.  This slows the enlongation of the eye and myopia progression.

Lenses are worn every night.  Cessation of lens wear will return your child's cornea to it's original shape.
