SENIOR'S EYE EXAMS
If you’re 60 or older, annual eye exams are essential to maintaining your vision. As you age, your risk of developing age-related eye diseases increases. Cataracts can cause difficulty driving at night or reading fine print.
Presbyopia often affects individuals in their 30s and 40s, leading to the need for reading glasses. It’s essential to protect your eyes from UV exposure, follow proper nutritional guidelines, and avoid smoking.
What can I expect at my eye exam?
Measurements of the eyes are obtained in order to determine optimum vision and the health of the eyes are assessed with the aid of eye drops to dilate your pupils. Bring along sunglasses to help with light sensitivity that may exist after the exam or bring someone to drive you home. The eye drops will wear off usually within one hour.
Eye diseases such as glaucoma often have no symptoms early on, but early detection can treat the condition and prevent permanent vision loss.
Children should have their first eye exam at 6 months old then once per year or as recommended by the doctor. Children often think what they see is normal and are unaware they are not seeing clearly.
Nearsightedness is in the inability to see objects far away clear. Prolonged close work and decreased outdoor light exposure can cause myopia (nearsightedness). We have methods to control the progression of this condition.
